He told The Midday 180 in Nashville Wednesday afternoon that the woman he spoke with from the Titans about a uniform number said 20 was available.
"She said, 'Hey, No. 20 is free, so you can have it,'" he said. "So you know I jumped on it real quick. Hopefully when I get there I'll have No. 20 in my locker."
The thing is, Titans 2014 second-round running back Bishop Sankey wears No. 20.
During camp, teams often have an offensive and defensive player wearing the same number on different colored jerseys.
But the Titans won't be running a number-sharing program for top players.
Sankey is likely to get a training camp chance to make a case for himself as the No. 3 running back who can offer a change of pace.
Byard could be their only 20 in relatively short order.
