I often say people should never be surprised when a negative, off-the-field development pops up about a player or former player.
We don’t know these guys as well as we think we do.
That’s not true for me in the case of Keith Bulluck. I covered his entire career with the Titans. And when I started as a host of The Midday 180 on 104.5 The Zone in Nashville, Tenn., in January 2012, he was one of the first people I spoke with about being part of it.
He’s been a regular, paid guest since early on.
So my feelings upon learning he’d been arrested early this morning for a very strange-sounding incident are, admittedly, different than they would be for a random player or former player.
I just talked to Bulluck on Saturday night outside the press box at LP Field when he was arriving to be part of the local broadcast of the Titans game against Atlanta.
We don’t barbeque together or anything like that, but I consider him a friend and I think he considers me one.
He's always been a no-nonsense straight-shooter who backed up what he said with what he did.
If he indeed stole $100 from a cab driver, it was obviously a dumb thing to do and something anyone, public figure or not, can’t expect to pull without getting arrested for it.
"I've been here for 10 years and this is what you want to talk about?" Bulluck told WKRN when he left jail.
I know he knows we have to talk about it.
I hope an eventual explanation makes more sense of it and it’s not all it seems at this stage.
UPDATE, 2:20 p.m. ET: Bulluck sent the following statement.
"I was out with friends last night in Nashville and was taking a cab home. There was a misunderstanding between me and the cab driver about getting my money back for a service not rendered. At 2 a.m., things could easily get lost in translation, but regardless of who was right or wrong, I regret putting myself in that situation."
