Inside the Eastern Conference playoffs

With the NBA playoffs beginning Saturday, here are some nuggets to get you ready for the playoffs in the East:

1 Chicago Bulls vs 8 Indiana Pacers (CHI won season series 3-1)

• The Bulls finished an NBA-best 62-20 this season, the sixth time in franchise history they won 60 games in a season. Each of the previous five times, Chicago went on to win the NBA Finals.

• Video surveillance showed the Bulls lead the league in opponent points per play in the half-court this season. Two of the last three teams to lead the league in this category went on to win the championship.

• No. 8 seeds are 3-51 all-time against No. 1 seeds in NBA playoff series. Since the format expanded to seven-game series in the first round in 2003, No. 8-seeds are 1-15 in those series.

2 Miami Heat vs 7 Philadelphia 76ers (MIA won season series 3-0)

LeBron James averaged 26.7 points per game while Dwyane Wade averaged 25.5. Only three teams in NBA history have won the NBA title with two players averaging 25 points per game.

• Miami’s ‘Big Three’ have been the best three-player combination in the NBA this season. The Heat are plus-575 with James, Wade and Chris Bosh on the floor together, including plus-54 in three games against the 76ers.

• The 76ers have lost four consecutive postseason series, tied for the second-longest active streak in the NBA. Philadelphia last won a postseason series in the 2003 playoffs.

3 Boston Celtics vs 6 New York Knicks (BOS won season series 4-0)

• Only six teams since the NBA merger (1976-77) have won an NBA Championship the season after losing in the NBA Finals. It happened most recently in 2009 with the Los Angeles Lakers. However, you have to go all the way back to the 1989 Detroit Pistons to find the last time it happened before that.

• According to video surveillance, the Celtics ranked second in the NBA holding opponents to 41.5 percent shooting in the half court, the fourth straight season Boston ranked in the top 5 of the NBA in opponent points per play in the half court.

• The Knicks are 0-8 on the road against the Celtics since Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen joined forces.

4 Orlando Magic vs 5 Atlanta Hawks (ATL won season series 3-1)

• Last season these two met in the Eastern Conference Semifinals and the Magic swept the series, winning by a combined 101 points, the largest point differential in a four-game sweep in NBA postseason history.

• Since Stan Van Gundy took over as head coach at the beginning of the 2007-08 season, the Magic have won six playoff series. In the first 18 seasons combined in franchise history, they won only five.

• The Hawks are entering the postseason on a six-game losing streak. The last team to open the playoffs on a losing streak of six games or more was the Golden State Warriors in 1988-89.
