Why the Spurs are great. A must-read story of funerals, family, and people being classy.
Yesterday I blogged about Chris Smith's Donnie Walsh profile in New York magazine. It included a great little anecdote about Walsh being alone in the locker room, not watching, as Reggie Miller created the greatest moment in recent Pacer history, by beating the Knicks with a three-pointer, steal, and another three-pointer. Smith says there is a little more to the story: "I said to Reggie Miller, 'that's a hilarious story about Donnie not seeing your great comeback in that Knicks playoff game.' "Reggie was silent for several seconds. "What do you mean?" he finally says. So I paraphrased what Donnie had told me about being mad that the Pacers had played lousy and stalking off to the lockerroom and having a tantrum. When I finish, Miller is silent again. "Wow," he says. "What i remember is when I got on the bus afterwards, Donnie pounding me on the back and saying, 'I knew you could do it!'"
Look, there I am on Maxim's website, talking trash about Harold Miner.
CNN's Campbell Brown talking to Charles Barkley about running for Alabama governor: "So are you going to run for governor? I plan on it in 2014. You are serious. I am, I can't screw up Alabama. There is no place to go but up in your view? We are number 48 in everything and Arkansas and Mississippi aren't going anywhere."
Looking back at his time in Denver in a talk with HoopsTV, Steve Blake won't complain about Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson as teammates: "Not only are they great players, but they are great guys and great teammates. They always treated me with a lot of respect and I have a lot of respect for them as well. They made my job easy. I pushed the ball up fast and found them in the right spots and let those two go to work. Then you just play off of them."
No one, and I mean no one, is above the NCAA.
David Berri of the Wages of Wins: "The model -- which looks at both college and preseason performance -- projects that Derrick Rose, Brook Lopez, Eric Gordon, Jerryd Bayless, Russell Westbrook, D.J. Augustin, and Joe Alexander will be below average for rookies. And a below average rookie is really not someone who will help a team win many games."
Mark Cuban says the government should reduce your credit card rate.
It's Amir Johnson time.
How perfect would it have been for the NBA -- opening night tonight and all -- if the World Series had fizzled to a close last night? I was playing the Tivo in slow motion to see if one of those groundskeepers furiously trying to preserve the mucky surface was in fact David Stern. One of them looked a little like him.

Candidates for governor in Washington talk about what it would take to get another NBA team.
The suggestion that the Nets might be just the tiniest bit for sale.
UPDATE: It's a fair question: What do we have to do to get more afros in the NBA?
