Liveblogging 2009 NBA Finals Game 2

Are the Lakers wholly dominant, or did Orlando just have a bad night on Thursday? Tonight we get to find out. We'll be liveblogging from Staples Center in Los Angeles once again. Game time is 8pm ET.

  • Henry Abbott Thanks for hanging around. More coming on TrueHoop tonight, but signing off the liveblog. Good night, everybody.

  • Henry Abbott Great night for Lamar Odom and the Lakers. Magic make a show of it, but this one's over. Orlando up against a wall.

  • Henry Abbott Guess Rashard's turn and fire in the last series wasn't a fluke.

  • Henry Abbott 65% of what Turkoglu does is work the refs. It works, too!

  • Henry Abbott Laker defense is strong and active, like the first half. Then a Gasol "and one," and Staples is the loudest it has been. 97-91 1:14 left.

  • Henry Abbott Redick just made the turnover that will make people question his crunch time burn.

  • Henry Abbott Eric Neel: Kobe can't take Hedo to the low block like he would a lot of defenders at this stage.

  • Henry Abbott Now that we're here, though, how glad is Stan Van Gundy that for once Dwight Howard is not in foul trouble? Only 3 ...

  • Henry Abbott Four minutes left in OT, tied. Who do you have? No idea who'll win this one.

  • Henry Abbott Dr. Jack, by coincidence, diagrammed that play for us on a picnic table yesterday afternoon. Then we see something like it tonight.

  • Henry Abbott Dr. Jack called a play like this to win a game in 1980: http://bit.ly/lNvkg

  • Henry Abbott Wow wow wow. That was a great play. A great pass. And Courtney Lee darn near got to become the Billy Ray Bates of 2009.

  • Henry Abbott Magic haven't gotten a play really run on either of their last two attempts. Both times just meaningless movement.

  • Henry Abbott Turkoglu inbounding, and making me look stupid.

  • Henry Abbott My bet:They won't be able to get it to Turkoglu, and Redick'll end up taking this shot. Or, possibly, the Magic don't get a shot off at all.

  • Henry Abbott 0.6 on the clock after instant replay. Got to think it'll be Turkoglu.

  • Henry Abbott Turkoglu with the block, recovery of the ball, and immediate timeout. Looks clean on the replay here.

  • Henry Abbott Looks like the Magic will have about a second or so here.

  • Henry Abbott Lakers force Turkoglu left again. Courtney Lee ends up having to create.

  • Henry Abbott Turkoglu 2 (good call). Arnovitz: If Orlando loses, everyone will question Stan Van Gundy's substitutions. If they win, he's a genius.

  • Henry Abbott Bam bam bam. A game starting with misses, ending with makes. Tied with a minute to play.

  • Henry Abbott Rafer Alston can't be loving the fact that the team is playing with no point guard instead of him.

  • Henry Abbott The second half of this game has been good stuff.

  • Henry Abbott A month ago, who thought J.J. Redick would be on the floor in a one-point Finals road game with 2:42 left?

  • Henry Abbott Turkoglu does that off-arm chicken wing thing like thirty times a night. This time, they call it.

  • Henry Abbott Lakers are forcing Turkoglu to his left hand.

  • Henry Abbott Two straight plays ending with Lamar Odom very upset with the referees.

  • Henry Abbott Last time it resulted in Bynum's fifth foul.

  • Henry Abbott Out of a timeout, the Magic ran a cross screen to get the ball to Howard. Better than just a post-up: Makes Lakers move and fight on D.

  • Henry Abbott Orlando now up two, with 6:13 to wash the memories of Game 1 away. This has been such an odd game though. I expect an odd finish.

  • Henry Abbott One-point game with 6:29 left. This ain't Game 1.

  • Henry Abbott Courtney Lee has played just seven minutes. Wonder what the story is there.

  • Henry Abbott And now Odom's made eight of his nine shots.

  • Henry Abbott Bynum to the bench, and in comes the player with the best +/- in the game, Lamar Odom.

  • Henry Abbott Lakers have only two offensive rebounds.

  • Henry Abbott What is that I felt. A hammer? A Polish Hammer? Marcin Gortat with a bucket.

  • Henry Abbott Eric Neel points out that Lamar Odom may be the most whimsical fouler in the game.

  • Henry Abbott Andrew Bynum's fifth foul somehow became Shannon Brown's first foul.

  • Henry Abbott Lamar Odom got twice his money's worth on that last foul. Replay shows him pulling down two players.

  • Henry Abbott Kevin Arnovitz points out that if Hedo starts demanding a lot of Laker attention, Howard could benefit.

  • Henry Abbott @andreaparma The part that is cheap it that Hedo's play was all about forcing the call, instead of playing basketball. Good call, no fun.

  • Henry Abbott Play by play shows it was 32-29 after a Lewis 3. Then Gasol went to the line. Perhaps they then reviewed the earlier Ariza or Fisher 3s?

  • Henry Abbott Shame on Dwight and Rashard. Both took a play off to whine at the ref, and it cost two points in a one-point game.

  • Henry Abbott RT @edgary23 With about 2:00 to go in the 2nd quarter, LA leading 32-29, suddenly it's 33-29. Can anyone with DVR confirm?

  • Henry Abbott Magic guards are attacking the rim, as Thorpe requested. Laker D is tough, though.

  • Henry Abbott Kind of hate Bynum's fourth call. One of those "you have to call it" things. But feels kind of cheap.

  • Henry Abbot
    t
The defense is just as good as the first half, but Kobe has decided that now it's time to score.

  • Henry Abbott Courtney Lee +4. Michael Pietrus -6.

  • Henry Abbott Eric Neel points out that Kobe Bryant once again has five first-half assists. That created his good look at a jumper.

  • Henry Abbott Thorpe also suggests Howard ought to be much stronger with the ball around Pau Gasol.

  • Henry Abbott Total Magic field goals not from Rashard Lewis: 4. Thorpe says Magic guards must attack more.

  • Henry Abbott RT from Kareem: @kaj33 "Bynum is not shooting a Skyhook he is shooting a jump hook."

  • Henry Abbott Thorpe said Laker challenge was to be even more active on D this game. Check.

  • Henry Abbott Luke Walton averaging about 200 fouls per game, over a five second period.

  • Henry Abbott Lakers want Bynum in the post vs. Gortat, but it's not working yet.

  • Henry Abbott Lewis, Battie, Gortat, Nelson, Redick. Unusual lineup.

  • Henry Abbott Anyone got a good replay of Dwight Howard blocking Gasol earlier? Word is perhaps he stuck his hand through the rim -- a violation.

  • Henry Abbott Magic have been doubling Kobe Bryant on the catch. Making someone else beat them. Late in the game, Bryant shoots anyway, I'd bet. Not now.

  • Henry Abbott Dwight Howard locates his inner post-scorer.

  • Henry Abbott Remember when Tracy McGrady scored 13 points himself in 39 seconds? That wasn't this game.

  • Henry Abbott Nine minutes of NBA basketball. 21 total points.

  • Henry Abbott Odom guarded by a small player, he battles at the hoop. Gortat comes in, and Odom starts running around on the perimeter. Versatility pays.

  • Henry Abbott Kobe vs. J.J. Redick. The double comes and Ariza misses the 3. If Ariza hits that consistently, no one's beating the Lakers.

  • Henry Abbott Lakers playing zone?

  • Henry Abbott Eric Neel points out that Ariza has gone to the paint three times already. Did he go at all in Game 1? Seems deliberate.

  • Henry Abbott Magic twin towers, perhaps in response to Lamar Odom making noise close to the hoop.

  • Henry Abbott Derek Fisher veered into Mickael Pietrus' path and then fell down. Don't love that call.

  • Henry Abbott Pau Gasol can play basketball.

  • Henry Abbott Last game Howard was very passive on pick and roll D. Today he gets an early steal on that same play.

  • Henry Abbott One more pass! Alston had Turkoglu wide open to his left.

  • Henry Abbott Anybody know what Courtney Lee did to get that second foul?

  • Henry Abbott When Magic's initial post fails, Kevin points out it would be nice for them to re-post more often.

  • Henry Abbott Laker D swarming. Seem to be doubles just about everywhere.

  • Henry Abbott Howard's block of Gasol was the Magic's play of the Finals so far.

  • Henry Abbott Dwight Howard shooting jumpers over the triple team. Doubt that was the gameplan.

  • Henry Abbott Rashard Lewis moving pick. Andrew Bynum meeting Howard high. Two quick fouls.

  • Henry Abbott Laker assistant Jim Cleamons: Option 1 worked so well last game. Tonight, how will Lakers be at getting to Option 2? Something to watch for.

  • Henry Abbott The guy from American Idol who sang the national anthem got boos when he was intro'd. But they loved him afterwards ...

  • Henry Abbott Game 1: Not a heck of a lot of basketball excitement. Game 2 wish: Adrenaline, tension, and a buzzer-beater.
