The pick: Brandon Scherff, guard, Iowa
My take: I’m surprised because not everyone viewed Scherff as a tackle (including me). But the part that I love is his demeanor; watch the kid play and you’ll fall in love with his on-field attitude. Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan just established what he wants from this team: tough, nasty, physical players. And an improved offensive line.
Different philosophy: From 2001-14, the Redskins were one of seven teams to select an NFL-low one offensive lineman in the first round (Trent Williams in 2010), according to ESPN Stats & Information. The result was a team that hasn’t sustained quality offensive line play in some time.
Shifting focus: With coach Jay Gruden and new line coach Bill Callahan, the Redskins have shifted away from the Mike Shanahan system that featured smaller, quicker linemen. At 320 pounds, Scherff is bigger than every Redskins offensive linemen except for Williams, the left tackle.
