Redskins TE Fred Davis remains confident

Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis’ playing time has been reduced. His confidence has not been dented.

The tight end is reportedly on the trading block, but that doesn’t mean Davis feels differently about his talents.

“I still feel I can be one of the top tight ends in this league,” Davis told the LaVar and Dukes show on 106.7 The Fan. “That won’t make me stop thinking about that. When I get the opportunity, trust me, I definitely will show it. Everything said about me definitely will change.”

Davis has not played much in recent weeks, partly because of a sprained ankle that has lingered. But also because of the emergence of rookie tight end Jordan Reed. He caught nine passes for 134 yards, the latter setting a franchise record for a rookie tight end.

Meanwhile, Davis was inactive Sunday. He is behind both Reed and Logan Paulsen on the depth chart. The coaches view Reed as a better pass-catcher and Paulsen as a better blocker. Davis caught 24 passes in seven games last season and 59 in 12 games the previous season. Davis said he hasn't talked to coach Mike Shanahan about his situation. Davis also said that he hasn't requested a trade, either.

“They must feel they have better options,” said Davis, who has caught just three passes this season. Meanwhile, Reed has 26 receptions. “There’s nothing to explain to me why they want to do something. I’m sure they have their reasons. They do what they want to do and I have to follow through with their game plan and make the best of it.”

Davis signed a one-year deal to return last offseason, turning down a two-year offer from Buffalo. His market value was diminished by a drug suspension in 2011 and an Achilles injury in 2012.

Davis defended his work habits, too.

“Anybody can make any accusation right now,” Davis said. “I’m the same player I’ve been the whole time I’ve been here and that was never said. Now I’m hearing all these things, which is crazy. I know how this game is; when you’re down everyone wants to kick you. … I just feel the only way I can show what I can do is by playing. I’ll just give it my best effort and if it’s somewhere else, I’ll give them my best effort.

“I’m a Redskin right now. Until I hear differently I want to help the team win.”
