Redskins notes: Williams' status uncertain

Nick Williams was signed to the active roster because, in part, of his return ability. Whether he gets a chance to show that Sunday remains to be seen.

Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said he’s not sure yet whether Williams will be active. Earlier in the week Shanahan said he wanted to see how Williams handled practice, knowing he might be active.

“He had a good week,” Shanahan said. “Practiced well, both in the return phase and as a receiver. I was pleased with the way he practiced.”

Shanahan always is mum on such topics and even more so when it involves a player the other team hasn’t seen a lot of, like Williams. If he doesn’t return punts, then Josh Morgan again will be deep. Shanahan did say last week after the Vikings’ loss that they’ll keep experimenting with the returns until they get it right. Thus far, it hasn’t been right.

  • Reed Doughty was named the special teams captain for the rest of the season. They already had two captains on offense (Robert Griffin III and Trent Williams) and two on defense (London Fletcher and Barry Cofield). Shanahan said those four players were overwhelmingly chosen as captains at the beginning of the season. It’s why he went with all four right away, rather than just two and then adding two more after the midway point.

  • Rookie Chris Thompson underwent surgery on the torn labrum in his left shoulder Thursday.

  • Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said he's not sure why running back Alfred Morris doesn't get more attention. A 3-6 record never helps, of course. But Shanahan said, "It’s only his second time in the league. It’s not like he was a big hyped up guy coming out of college, so I don’t think people started to even know his name until probably halfway through the year last year. But he’s a good player so more and more people are noticing him and he doesn’t draw attention to himself so he doesn’t get any extra attention that way. If you watch the tape and stuff, he’s a hell of a player and I think the more tape out there the more people are seeing him and the more everyone’s going to know him.”
