Redskins waive injured Jerry Rice, Jr.

Receiver Jerry Rice, Jr., was a longshot even to make the Washington Redskins' practice squad, let alone earn a roster spot. But it was an injury that prevented him from even having a chance.

Rice was waived/injured by the Redskins, according to the NFL transaction report, and will be placed on injured reserve if he goes unclaimed off waivers. Rice tore his right labrum three days ago and the Redskins had said he would need surgery, thereby ending his season. Rice was going to have a tough time making the roster after catching just 10 passes for 73 yards as a senior at UNLV.

The Redskins have not yet filled his roster spot, though they were scheduled to work out some players Saturday afternoon, according to general manager/president Bruce Allen.

Rice is the second Redskins player to suffer a season-ending torn labrum. Courtney Bridget did so before Rice and ended up on Washington's injured reserve list.
