If Koji Uehara (strained pectoral) is able to return and pitch well in September, it would ease many concerns about the Red Sox's bullpen. But will he? On Friday, he threw 53 pitches off a mound "with good intensity," according to manager John Farrell. Uehara will throw again Monday, possibly facing a few hitters. Said Farrell: "He's making some pretty good strides."

Jackie Bradley Jr. has three hits in his last 34 at-bats and is 25-for-90 (.167) in August and 32-for-148 (.216) since the All-Star break. So, for the first time since May 13, he's batting in the No. 9 spot for the Red Sox tonight vs. the Royals. "There's been some pitches up in the strike zone where he's not getting to," manager John Farrell said. "There's been times he's expanded below the strike zone on some offspeed pitches. He's been kind of all-or-nothing."
