Royals 4, Red Sox 2: Farewell, for now, to first place. Salvador Perez and Mike Moustakas homered off Rick Porcello to send the Red Sox to their fifth loss in the last six games. With the Yankees defeating the Rays, the Red Sox slipped a half-game behind New York in the AL East. It's the first time since June 21 that Boston doesn't have at least a share of the division lead. The Sox mustered only seven hits, two for extra bases.

In 11 starts this year, David Price's control has been off compared with last season.

David Price could resume playing catch by Monday or Tuesday. "I don't think this is anything compared to what he went through in spring training in terms of severity," manager John Farrell said. "That's by his own admission."

Dave Dombrowski: "We're not going to go out and make a big trade for a starting pitcher" Doug Fister will take David Price's spot in the rotation, according to Dombrowski.

Citing HIPAA laws, Dave Dombrowski said he couldn't get into detail about David Price's elbow injury. Red Sox are in "evaluation stage," but expect Price will pitch again this season, according to Dombrowski. The elbow issue was brought to Dombrowski's attention Tuesday.

Dustin Pedroia on Red Sox's leadership: "Whatever people say from the outside -- we don't have a leader. I'm standing right here. Been here for a long time. And we're in first place. Write what you guys want. Here I am. You don't see anyone else standing up here doing this. Nope. There's your source, from my mouth."

Dustin Pedroia says he has spoken to Dennis Eckersley and expects David Price to do the same when they see each other. Pedroia also declared himself the "leader" of the Red Sox.

So here we are again, faced with a question of the health of David Price's elbow, but has anything really changed? Caution was the proper play with him in March just as it is today, though if you're his owner, one way we might get a better read on his rest-of-year prognosis (besides awaiting the MRI results) is to see whether the Boston Red Sox add any starting-pitching help before Monday's deadline. I am and have been a big fan of a healthy Price over the years, but I'm unfortunately as pessimistic today as I've been at any point this year. Don't go out of your way to keep him on an ESPN mixed roster.

Tough time to lose Price

With the Red Sox clinging to a half-game lead in the AL East, they placed starter David Price on the disabled list Friday with left elbow inflammation. In his short time with Boston, Price has been a much better pitcher this time of year.

ESPN Stats and Information

David Price is now headed to the 10-day disabled list after receiving an MRI on his throwing elbow Thursday. Since 2010, Price ranks in the top 5 among pitchers in pitches thrown, innings pitched, and batters faced.

DE Kony Ealy answered questions from reporters for the first time in training camp, and naturally, one of the first was why he was held out of Thursday's opening session. He said it wasn't injury-related, before adding, "You have to ask Coach Bill. Me and him had something going on, or whatever. Other than that just happy to be back out here, and ready to go," said Ealy, who had also missed the final stretch of spring practices. Asked if he was OK with everything, Ealy said, "Of course. Am I going to go against what Coach Belichick says? No. … At the end of the day, my job is to come here and do everything I need to do for the team and do the right things on and off the field."

Red Sox are calling David Price's injury "left elbow inflammation." The DL move is retroactive to Tuesday, so earliest Price could pitch would be next Friday (Aug. 4) vs. White Sox.

Rick Porcello will start tonight for Red Sox. Lefty reliever Robby Scott recalled from Triple-A to fill David Price's spot on the roster.
