Rafael Devers' first big-league hit is a solo homer to straightaway center field at Safeco. That's one way to convince the Red Sox to keep him around.

The Patriots have signed undrafted rookie DE Caleb Kidder to their 90-man roster, according to Kidder's agents at Reign Sports. The 6-foot-5, 260-pound Kidder, who played in college at Montana, had signed with the Minnesota Vikings after the draft. He was released last week. The Patriots had an open spot on the 90-man roster and don't need to make a corresponding roster move.

Patriots special teams captain Matthew Slater said players would be foolish to believe and buy into what is being said about the team. Slater said that he finds some of the talk/hype disrespectful, which seemed to be a reference to a possible undefeated season.

Red Sox don't seem to be considering a DL stint for Xander Bogaerts, who has dealt with groin injury, bruised hand and illness and is 4-for-34 with eight strikeouts in his last nine games. Timing, not injury, is the problem, according to John Farrell. "When you watch him in his early work, watch the BP he takes, it's hard to suggest any ailment is affecting his swing because he's driving the baseball out of the ballpark with routine ability," Farrell said.

Any competition for Pats in AFC East?

According to ESPN's Football Power Index, the Patriots have a 92 percent chance to win the AFC East. That's by far the most overwhelming division favorite in the three years of preseason FPI data. It's worth noting both the 2016 Panthers and 2015 Colts failed to make the playoffs, never mind win their division.
