The Patriots' defense stayed true to form, as it stiffened in the red zone to limit the Dolphins to a field goal on their opening drive. The unit might give up yards, but when the space gets tight on the field, it has found a way to stop the opposition more often than not.

Red Sox still searching for middle-of-lineup bat

Giancarlo Stanton wasn't a match for the Red Sox, but they weren't thrilled to have him go to the Yankees, especially as they're still searching for a big bat in the middle of the lineup. J.D. Martinez and Eric Hosmer are still out there.

Patriots inactives: LB David Harris, OT Cole Croston, DE Trey Flowers, ST Brandon King, RB Mike Gillislee, OT Marcus Cannon and LB Kyle Van Noy. This means that two players who were game-time decisions – OT LaAdrian Waddle and DE Deatrich Wise Jr. – passed their pre-game tests. Also, WR Chris Hogan and special teams captain Matthew Slater are active after missing the last four and three games, respectively.

Dave Dombrowski: Red Sox circled back to Marlins GM Michael Hill about Giancarlo Stanton last week, at which Miami was already engaged with the Yankees. Sox believed Marlins' initial asking price last month was too high. Dombrowski denies that he told Stanton's agents that pitching was Sox's top priority.

Scott Lauber ESPN Staff Writer

To the best of agent Joel Wolfe's knowledge, the Red Sox didn't attempt to make a trade with the Marlins for Giancarlo Stanton. Wolfe's assumption is Sox weren't looking for an outfielder. The Sox weren't on Stanton's list of four teams to which he would've approved a trade. Giants and Cardinals weren't on that list either, but before Stanton nixed it, they worked out deals with Marlins for him.

Since GM meetings, the feeling in Giancarlo Stanton's camp was that Red Sox's priority is pitching, not outfielders. "(Andrew) Benintendi, (Mookie) Betts and JBJ, those guys are studs," said Stanton's agent, Joel Wolfe.

Celtics' Irving has quad contusion, out vs. Bulls

Celtics guard Kyrie Irving will miss Monday's game against the Bulls because of a left quadriceps contusion. The Celtics, playing the second night of a back-to-back on the road, also will be without forward Marcus Morris, who is battling knee soreness.

Joel Wolfe, Giancarlo Stanton's agent: Boston was never presented to us as an option." In other words, the Red Sox didn't work out trade with the Marlins, as the Giants and Cardinals did. The Red Sox weren't among the four teams on Stanton's go-to list (Yankees, Dodgers, Cubs, Astros).

Celtics say Kyrie Irving (left quad contusion) and Marcus Morris (left knee soreness) are both out tonight vs. Bulls. Al Horford (right knee contusion) is questionable.
