Sox seeking first Yankee Stadium clinch

With the Red Sox a win away from clinching the AL East, the Elias Sports Bureau notes that they have never locked up a postseason berth with a win at Yankee Stadium. They did clinch the AL pennant in 1904 at Hilltop Park, the then-home of the Yankees, however.

Red Sox's celebration put on hold

With a loss to the Yankees on Tuesday, the Red Sox's magic number to clinch the AL East remains at one. When they do, they will become the first team in MLB history to go worst-to-first twice in a five-year span, per the Elias Sports Bureau.

David Ortiz: "I went 0-for-5 today, so I don't got s--- to talk about." How about going 0-for-5 in opener of his final series at Yankee Stadium? "That ain't fun."

When David Ortiz strolled to the plate, representing the go-ahead run with two outs in the ninth, Yankees manager Joe Girardi thought, "I was like, 'What are the chances he is coming up in this situation. It is kind of the way fate had it tonight." Ortiz struck out against Tyler Clippard to end the game, preventing the Red Sox from clinching the AL East.
