An eight-run implosion in the sixth inning dooms the Red Sox to a 10-4 loss to the surging Royals on Sunday Night Baseball. Boston is two games behind Toronto in the AL East and one ahead of Baltimore for the first AL wild-card berth. Kansas City, meanwhile, has won 17 of its last 21.

If Boston doesn't win the AL East or misses the playoffs entirely, the bullpen will be an enormous reason.

With that home run -- a solo shot in the fourth inning -- David Ortiz has tied Jimmie Foxx for 18th on the all-time list with 534 homers. Next up: Mickey Mantle at 536. Ortiz has 31 homers this season. Red Sox now trail the Royals, 2-1.

Long on Patriots attitude: 'Today is the most important day' (0:31)

Twelve days after having surgery on his left ankle, Red Sox catcher/left fielder Blake Swihart rolled (literally, with the aid of a scooter) into the clubhouse before the game. While he expects to be ready for spring training, the majority of his offseason will be spent rehabbing. He's unlikely to be able to play winter ball to make up for lost at-bats after getting injured in early June.

Dustin Pedroia, who is away from the Red Sox tonight to attend family funeral services, will rejoin the team early Monday evening. Pedroia won't start Monday night's game, but will be available off the bench. In fact, manager John Farrell said Pedroia texted that he plans on getting a walkoff hit in the bottom of the ninth.

Patriots rookie QB Jacoby Brissett was 9-of-9 passing in the team's preseason win Friday but says, "You see things you could have done better." Brissett had entered the game with 3:48 remaining in the third quarter.

Patriots CB Logan Ryan talks about how "turnovers are contagious" after the team had three interceptions in Friday's preseason win over Carolina. Ryan had one of them.

Blazing-hot Dustin Pedroia is expected to miss the Red Sox's Sunday Night Baseball matchup against the Royals for personal reasons, as the Boston Herald reported. Additional details, including how many games Pedroia will miss, are not yet known. Sox manager John Farrell will address the situation later today in his pregame press briefing. Pedroia has 11 hits in his last 12 at-bats.
