Will Ortiz hurt Betts by splitting MVP votes?

When two candidates from the same team are in MVP contention, theory arises that they'll split the votes, allowing a third player from another team to win the award. It's possible -- but not likely -- to happen to Mookie Betts and David Ortiz. Schoenfield: Myths of MVP voting (Insider)

Mingo should boost Pats' pass rush (0:55)

Mike Reiss ESPN New England Patriots reporter

Per Adam Schefter, the Browns are trading former first-round pick, LB Barkevious Mingo, to the Patriots. Mingo was the sixth overall pick in the 2013 draft and has seven sacks in three seasons. The Browns did not pick up his fifth-year option and he was scheduled to become a free agent after this season. Patriots hoping he will provide some additional pass rush.

Is Gronk more dominant than J.J. Watt?

Rob Gronkowski practically lapped the TE field in #NFLRank, but Watt exceeded his fellow 3-4 DEs by just a smidge more. Meanwhile, Martellus Bennett cracked the top 10 among tight ends. #NFLRank audit by position (Insider)

Eduardo Rodriguez will start for the Red Sox on Sunday Night Baseball vs. the Royals at Fenway Park. Rodriguez just threw a bullpen session in Tampa and came away telling reporters that he felt no issues with his hamstring. He missed his most recent start last Sunday in Detroit after leaving an Aug. 16 start in Baltimore in the fifth inning despite not allowing a hit.

Tough day at the office for Boston

It started when Andrew Benintendi sprained his knee on a bad piece of baserunning -- an injury that landed him on the DL. It got worse when the Red Sox lost on a walk-off error, the third time that has happened this season. No other team has more than one such defeat, David Schoenfield notes. David Ortiz etches his place in AL lore

With his two-run home run on Wednesday, Ortiz reached exactly 30 HR and 100 RBI on the season. He is now tied for the fifth-most 30-homer, 100-RBI seasons in AL history, ESPN Stats & Info notes.

Red Sox rookie left fielder Andrew Benintendi has been placed on the 15-day disabled list after twisting his left knee awkwardly as he dove into second base. Benintendi underwent an MRI exam Thursday, and manager John Farrell told reporters that it's too soon to know whether the injury is season-ending. Benintendi, the Red Sox's 22-year-old outfield prospect, was batting .324 since getting called up earlier this month. In his absence, veteran outfielder Chris Young will get the majority of the at-bats in left field, with utilityman Brock Holt filling in against tough right-handed pitching.

Keep a lookout tomorrow for updates on Andrew Benintendi, who sprained his knee as a result of a bad baserunning play. On second base on a grounder to shortstop, he attempted to return to second even though he had already passed the fielder. He was tagged out as he tried to evade the tag.

Is Betts MLB's top defensive outfielder?

Mookie Betts has shown he can handle center field as well as right, which earns bonus points from Keith Law. Is it enough for him to rank No. 1 with the glove? And what about Jackie Bradley Jr.? Best fielding/throwing tools (Insider)
