Dick Kelley battled ALS for 3 years

Longtime Boston College sports information director Dick Kelley died on Thursday night after a near-three year battle with ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He was 48.

"Dick fought the disease with the same passion that he displayed for his job and for life," Boston College associate athletics director Chris Cameron told ESPN.com. "His death is tragic, but those who love him are comforted by the fact that he died peacefully."

Kelley was a 1987 graduate of Boston College and joined the sports information department in 1991.

An Andover, Mass., native, he was honored last year, being given the USBWA's Most Courageous Award.
