Wakefield gets 2,000th strikeout

BOSTON -- Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield struck out Blue Jays outfielder Vernon Wells swinging to end the top of the fourth inning on Wednesday, recording the 2,000th strikeout of his career.

The crowd cheered as the center-field scoreboard noted the accomplishment and Wakefield popped out of the dugout to tip his cap.

Wakefield went seven innings and struck out five but took the loss as the Red Sox fell to the Jays 3-2.

Wakefield joins Jamie Moyer, Javier Vazquez and Andy Pettitte as the lone active pitchers to record 2,000 career strikeouts.
