FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady didn't play in Thursday night's preseason opener against the Jaguars.
Brady has practiced every day to this point in training camp, so this does not appear to be injury related.
In Brady's absence, third-year backup Brian Hoyer and rookie Ryan Mallett split time under center. Hoyer threw for 171 yards and Mallett threw for 164 as the Patriots won, 47-12.
Brady played in all 16 games last season, passing for 3,900 yards while completing 65.9 percent of his passes.
