2. Valentine Fired; Farrell Hired

Oct. 4 and Oct. 20: A day after the finale of a dreadful 69-93 season, the Red Sox halted the Bobby Valentine era and vowed to fix the problems. "This year's won-loss record reflects a season of agony. It begs for changes," said Sox president Larry Lucchino. Just 16 days later, they hired Boston's former pitching coach and current Blue Jays manager John Farrell. "I am honored and humbled," said a warmly welcomed Farrell.
