5. Injuries Help Sink Sox

April 13 and July 16: Jacoby Ellsbury dislocated his shoulder while sliding into second base against the Rays and missed three months on the DL. The 2011 runner-up in MVP voting never regained his groove. Meanwhile, David Ortiz -- in the midst of a career year -- injured his Achilles while rounding second base against the White Sox and was never the same. He sat out six weeks, tried to return to the lineup, and sat back down for the rest of the season. In total, the Red Sox put 27 players go on the disabled list a franchise record 34 times in 2012.
