2004: Patience rewarded with Wilfork & Watson

The Patriots had acquired an additional 2004 first-round pick from a trade with the Ravens the previous year, and their patience was rewarded when University of Miami defensive lineman Vince Wilfork slipped to them at the No. 21 overall pick. He's remains a franchise player. Tight end Benjamin Watson, taken with the 32nd overall pick, played out his six-year rookie deal (a point of contention that led to a holdout) before departing. -- Mike Reiss
