Thiago Alves to make UFC return

Former top UFC welterweight contender Thiago Alves will return to action for the first time in more than a year on Aug. 17 when he faces Matt Brown, the promotion officially announced on Tuesday.

The fight will take place at TD Garden in Boston.

Alves has not competed since March 3, 2012. After controlling most of the UFC on FX 2 main event, an overaggressive Alves got caught in a guillotine choke by Martin Kampmann and tapped at 4:12 of the third round.

In July 2009 at UFC 100, Alves came up short in his bid to dethrone 170-pound titleholder Georges St-Pierre. Alves was taken to the ground repeatedly by the champ en route to a lopsided unanimous-decision loss.

Brown will seek to extend his win streak to six. He knocked out Jordan Mein in the second round of a bout on April 20.

Lightweights Joe Lauzon and Michael Johnson will also square off at the Aug. 17 event. Lauzon is a resident of Bridgewater, Mass.
