Oscar Valdez-Miguel Marriaga

Boxing

In what was probably the most difficult fight of his young career, featherweight Oscar Valdez (22-0, 19 KOs) needed all 12 rounds to defeat Miguel Marriaga on Saturday at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. All three judges had the fight for Valdez 119-108, 116-111 and 118-109. "I'm just happy I won the fight," said Valdez. Asked about a though Round 12, Valdez said, "I wasn't hurt, but I did feel his punches. I'm glad I won the fight." Valdez said he would like to unify titles with the other champions in the division, Leo Santa Cruz, Gary Russell Jr. and Lee Selby.

Anthony Joshua wants Tyson Fury to box again and considers his British rival the biggest fight available to him beyond April 29's IBF-WBA world heavyweight clash with former champion Wladimir Klitschko. Fury has not fought since beating Klitschko and has been trading insults with Joshua on social media. "If it were up to me, that would have been the fight [against Fury] happening this summer," IBF champion Joshua told reporters during a media event at his training base, the English Institute of Sport, in Sheffield. "I was planning for a massive showdown with Tyson Fury, but he had other plans and I just had to carry on. Do I want him to come back? Yes, definitely."
