Showtime made it official on Thursday that it will televise the vacant super middleweight world title bout between David Benavidez (18-0, 17 KOs), of Phoenix, and Ronald Gavril (18-1, 14 KOs), a Las Vegas-based Romania native, on Sept. 8 (10 p.m. ET/PT) from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. At age 20, Benavidez is bidding to become the youngest super middleweight world titleholder in the history of the division created in 1984. Showtime will also air two 10-round super middleweight undercard fights: J'Leon Love (23-1, 13 KOs), of Las Vegas, taking on Abraham Han (26-3, 16 KOs), of El Paso, Texas, and Caleb Plant (15-0, 10 KOs), of Nashville, facing Mexico’s Alan Campa (16-3, 11 KOs).

A purse bid for the rematch between secondary super middleweight titlist Tyron Zeuge (21-0-1, 11 KOs), 25, of Germany, and Isaac Ekpo (31-3, 24 KOs), 34, of Nigeria, has been scheduled for Aug. 28. They first met March 25 in Germany and Zeuge retained his belt via competitive fifth-round technical decision. Ekpo requested a rematch and was granted one, but then the WBA granted Zeuge’s request for a special permit to face Paul Smith with the stipulation that the winner face Ekpo next. Zeuge outpointed Smith on June 17 and with the Zeuge and Ekpo camps unable to make a deal the purse bid was ordered, though they could still come an agreement at the last minute.

The rematch between featherweight world titleholder Leo Santa Cruz (33-1-1, 18 KOs) and secondary titlist and mandatory challenger Abner Mares (30-2-1, 15 KOs), which was penciled in to headline a Showtime card on Oct. 7 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, will not happen this year, multiple sources with direct knowledge of the situation told EPSN. The WBA, the organization sanctioning the fight, canceled a purse bid recently when the camps told it a deal was in place -- but it never did get completed, the sources said. There were a variety of issues, including how the fighters would split the money. Also, the source said that the Santa Cruz side preferred for there to be a doubleheader on which both fighters faced other lesser opponents before having the rematch in early 2018, but that did not interest Showtime. Santa Cruz outpointed Mares by majority decision in their action-packed featherweight title bout for Los Angeles bragging rights at Staples Center in August 2015.

Why does the Nevada State Athletic Commission have rules if they are willing to change them for one fight and allow Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor to box in 8-ounce gloves when the rule is clearly 10-ounce gloves for the 154-pound weight class the fight is taking place in? The commission claims the rules are in place as a matter of safety and the Association of Ringside Physicians, a leading group of medical professionals dedicated to the health and safety of boxers and mixed martial artists, wrote the commission a letter saying the rule should not be waved. Yet, the commission changed the rule for no apparent reason. What’s next, allowing glass-coated gloves or for the fighters to be allowed to use chairs WWE-style?

Unified middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin was well within the mandated weight limit at his WBC 30-day weight check on Wednesday. He weighed 170 pounds though he could have been as heavy as 176 pounds for the weight check in advance of his long-awaited showdown with Canelo Alvarez on Sept. 16 (HBO PPV) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) did not participate in the 30-day weight check because he has declined to box for the WBC title, though Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) is defending it along with his two other major 160-pound title belts.

Golden Boy Promotions hoped to match Joseph Diaz Jr., the 2012 U.S. Olympian it promotes, and England’s Josh Warrington in a featherweight world title eliminator on the Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin HBO PPV undercard on Sept. 16 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. However, Golden Boy told ESPN that Warrington (25-0, 5 KOs) and promoter Frank Warren pulled out of the scheduled purse bid and won’t go through with the fight. Golden Boy said it is now going down the WBC’s rankings to find an opponent willing to face Diaz (24-0, 13 KOs) in the eliminator that would move the winner toward a mandatory shot at world titlist Gary Russell Jr. (28-1, 17 KOs).

World Boxing Super Series officials announced that former world titleholder Krzysztof Glowacki (27-1, 17 KOs) and Mateusz Masternak (39-4, 26 KOs), both of Poland, have been named as reserves for the eight-man cruiserweight tournament. Assuming they are not needed to act as reserves, they will fight on the undercards of the quarterfinal they are assigned to. Glowacki, who lost his belt to tournament No. 1 seed Oleksandr Usyk, is the reserve for the Mairis Briedis-Mike Perez title fight on Sept. 30 in Riga, Latvia. If one of the fighters is unable to fight that night, Glowacki will step in as the replacement. Former European champion Masternak is the reserve for the Murat Gassiev-Krzysztof Wlodarczyk title fight. The date and venue of that bout has not yet been announced.
