When I read this morning that the great Hall of Fame former middleweight world champion Jake LaMotta – the “Raging Bull” – had died at age 95, I thought back to the first time I met one of boxing’s fiercest warriors. I was in New York covering a fight in around 2002ish. I was out at a bar in the upper east side of Manhattan with a few boxing people one night during fight week. LaMotta, wearing the big cowboy hat he always wore, came into the place. He knew a few of the people I was with, including promoter Lou DiBella, so he came over to our group to say hello. Then he took off his hat, bent his head over and said to me in deadpan fashion, “Nice to meet you. My name is Robert De Niro.” I am sure he used that line all the time but I got a good laugh out of it. If you don’t get the joke: De Niro famously played LaMotta in the classic Martin Scorsese-directed 1980 film “Raging Bull” and won the Oscar for best actor.

Abel Sanchez, who trains unified middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin, strongly felt GGG defeated Canelo Alvarez in their mega fight on Saturday night in Las Vegas. And like everybody he was appalled by the ridiculous 118-110 scorecard Adalaide Byrd turned in in favor of Alvarez, who wound up getting a split draw. Since HBO will replay the bout on Saturday night beginning at 10 p.m. ET/PT, Sanchez had this to say on Tuesday: "Now Ms. Byrd will have the chance to see the fight she missed on Sept. 16."
