British heavyweight contender Tyson Fury, on a path to a potential rematch with countryman Dereck Chisora, will face Gonzalo Omar Basile in a scheduled 10-round bout on Feb. 15, at the Copper Box Arena in London, Team Fury announced on Friday.
Chisora (19-4, 13 KOs), a former world title challenger, is slated to defend his European title in the main event against an opponent to be determined after Andriy Rudenko of Ukraine dropped out last week because of a torn Achilles tendon. If Chisora and Fury (21-0, 15 KOs) both win, promoter Frank Warren said he hopes to match them this summer in a rematch of Fury's crowd-pleasing decision win against Chisora in July 2011.
Fury's career has been stalled since last April because former world titleholder David Haye of England pulled out twice from their fight due to injuries.
"It's been a while, but I'm looking forward to getting in the ring again and showing the world that Tyson Fury is back in action and on course for the world title," Fury said. "I wouldn't say that rust has set in because I haven't fought. I'm always training and in the gym sparring, but I'm now desperate to get in the ring at the Copper Box Arena in front of a big electric crowd and do what I was born and bred to do -- fight and win."
Fury's fight with Basile has the look of a mismatch. Basile (61-8, 28 KOs) is 39 and has been knocked out in seven of his eight defeats, including four times inside two rounds.
Fury, 25, has not fought since his April fight in New York against former cruiserweight titlist Steve Cunningham, who knocked Fury down in the second round before Fury rebounded for a seventh-round knockout victory.
"Basile looks good. He's experienced with fights and has fought in plenty of [regional] title fights," Fury said. "He's seen a lot in his career against the likes of Alexander Dimitrenko and Artur Szpilka, but he's never seen a man like Tyson Fury before. He's just a few inches shorter than me [6-foot-6 to 6-8], which is great because I've been fighting shorter men. He'll be near my height and once I work out the range and timing, those big right hands will be detonating on his jaw."
