MEXICO -- Sergio Thompson had been on a hot streak, but junior lightweight titlist Takashi Miura was just a little hotter on Saturday, earning a unanimous decision win at the Plaza de Toros in Cancun.
After flooring Thompson (27-3, 25 KOs) twice in the fight, Miura rebounded from a knockdown and took the Mexican challenger the distance. Thompson, 29, who had been riding a 13-fight winning streak, couldn't keep up with Japan's Miura, who was favored by all three judges, 114-110 (twice) and 113-112.
Thompson went down in the second round on a hard right hand from Miura, who was successful in the first defense of the title he won from Gamaliel Diaz last April. Miura floored Thompson again in the sixth, before the challenger returned the favor in the eighth.
