GREEN FIELDS AND CRYSTAL CLEAR WATERS
By Dan Richards
Playing in the crystal-clear waters and beautiful beaches of Hawaii is just one of the many perks of going to school at the University of Hawaii, better known around the islands simply as UH! But another great perk is the excitement of Warrior football on Saturdays when everyone, with their family and friends, packs the freeways and streets all headed in the direction of Aloha Stadium to see the Warriors light up the scoreboard.
In the past the Warriors have had some rough times going 5-31 from 1995-98; but don't get hung up on those stats because the very next year when June Jones arrived to coach we went 9-4 to be co-champions of the WAC for the second time (the first was in '92 with an 11-2 record).
2005 was tough going 5-7, however, during our most recent campaign for the 2006 year we went 11-3 with all of our losses coming by less than one touchdown, proving the pieces were put together and we are ready to make a run for years to come.
Being from one of the most isolated places on Earth doesn't help get national attention and recognition from AP and Coaches Poll voters when our games air at Midnight ET and everyone is sleeping. After an electric win over Arizona St. in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl football fans of America saw how exciting and talented our team is.
Colt Brennan set the single-season TD mark and Jason Rivers had 14 catches for 308 yards receiving, the most in a bowl game, which proves the Warriors are a force to be reckoned with.
Finally the players Hawaii has sent to the NFL have proved they can play with the big guys; to name a few: Jason Elam, Vince Manuwai, Jeff Ulbrich, Ashley Lelie, Chad Owens and Al Noga. These guys will sooned be joined by players from our competitive
2006 draft class as well as Colt Brennan when he decides to go Pro.
The history, excitement, talent and fan involvement should make Hawaii higher than Nevada and Wyoming at least since the Warriors proved they could beat the Wolfpack and Rebels this season and I am sure they can run over the Cowboys too. Watch out America, the Warriors are coming in 2007 led by Colt Brennan and the exciting UH football team.
