Maine quarterback Mike Buck played in 12 games over four seasons after being drafted by the Saints in 1990. Other Black Bears drafted in recent years include running back Lorenzo Bouier, defensive back Rob Sterling, guard Scott Hough and guard Justin Strzelczyk.

On Sept. 18, 2004, Division I-AA Maine beat Mississippi State 9-7. The Black Bears also won the 2001 and 2002 Atlantic 10 titles. Before they joined the A-10, the Black Bears won nine Yankee Conference titles. Hall of fame coaches David M. Nelson and Eddie "Robbie" Robinson briefly coached at Maine.
