There are cowboys, bears and broncos aplenty, just no pro teams in Wyoming, where the soundtrack would be narrated by Curt Gowdy. The versatile broadcaster played basketball and tennis, but not football, at Wyoming in the 1940s. Among the pros to emerge from the state: James Kiick, who played in the backfield alongside Larry Csonka on the undefeated 1972 Dolphins, and tight end Jay Novacek.

A number of great coaches have ridden through Laramie. Bowden Wyatt's 1950 Cowboys won the Skyline Conference and the Gator Bowl (before he won the SWC at Arkansas and SEC at Tennessee). Bob Devaney (before he became a Nebraska legend) and Pat Dye (before he took over Auburn) also coached Wyoming. In 1949, Wyoming set the Division I-A record for most points scored, beating Northern Colorado 103-0.
