Cubs pitcher Jon Lester clarified any confusion as to why he didn't attend the White House ceremony to celebrate the Cubs championship on Monday tweeting he had a death in the family and the funeral was on Monday. Several players missed the ceremony including Jake Arrieta who also was dealing with family issues. The Cubs also have stated no player missed the ceremony for political reasons. Lester attended after the Red Sox won the WS in 2013.
