Cubs swept by Reds as bullpen falters again

Reliever Pedro Strop called the Cubs' fourth straight loss to the last-place Reds "a tough one to swallow" after a move to the bullpen once again backfired. Cincinnati's four-game sweep was its first against the Cubs since 1983.

Joe Maddon took a ‘gotta move on' approach after the Cubs got swept by the Reds. He and the coaches will wear bib overalls from shinesty.com on the long flight to L.A. His is an American flag overall: "This was pre-planned. You still eat. You still sleep. You still pet your puppy and move on."

Cubs pitching melted in the seventh inning, giving up 7 runs to the Reds. Two inherited runners scored when Pedro Strop served up a 3 run homer to Jesse Winker. It was the 15th and 16th inherited runners to score off the Cubs in June after they allowed just 19 percent of them to cross the plate in May. That percentage is now 43.2 percent this month with a week to play. Strop went on to give up four of his own runs as the Cubs are staring at a sweep at the hands of the last place team in the division.

Cubs moves: Tyler Chatwood has left the team to be with his wife who's in labor. Mike Montgomery will start today. Kris Bryant has a sore left shoulder and is day to day. He won't play Sunday. The Cubs have optioned Luke Farrell and DL'd Rob Zastryzny (back) replacing them with Justin Hancock and Cory Mazzoni. The Bryant injury is described as wear and tear on the shoulder.

The Cubs admit they have to play better baseball but gave credit to the Reds for taking the first three games of the series this weekend. Cincinnati is now 28-30 under interim manager Jim Riggleman, after starting the season 3-15. Joe Maddon was asked about losing 3 straight to a last place team: “We went 0-6 on a road trip last year. It's called baseball. It's under the category of baseball but while you're saying that don't denigrate Cincinnati. This is an improved ball club and their pitching is way improved.” The Cubs have scored a total of 7 runs in the first three games, in a ballpark they usually put up big numbers in.

Cubs pitcher Rob Zastryzny left Saturday's game with back tightness but doesn't believe it's anything serious. It tightened up on him gradually, leading his catcher to come out to the mound before manager Joe Maddon pulled him.

Cubs catcher Willson Contreras believes Saturday's home plate umpire, Greg Gibson, got personal with him which led to the ejection of bench coach Brandon Hyde while Contreras was at the plate: “It all happened because I asked for timeout and apparently I didn't thank him...I never argued a single ball or a strike. I kept my mouth shut. I wasn't arguing with him about anything else...He said something to me that I didn't think he needed to say. I'm here because I earned my spot here. I just didn't appreciate what he said..It was something that I felt was directed at me personally. I'm not going to repeat what he said because I'm being professional. He knows what he said to me.”

Including one today, Cubs relievers have allowed 41.1 percent of inherited runners to score in June, sixth most in the NL. It comes one month after allowing just 19 percent, which was fourth best in the league at that time. Brian Duensing allowed Joey Votto to score today after a 2 out walk in the third inning and then allowed 5 more runs, which were charged to him.

One inning after the Cubs gave up six runs, bench coach Brandon Hyde was ejected after arguing with home plate umpire Greg Gibson while Willson Contreras was in the batter's box. After the ejection, manager Joe Maddon had a lengthy conversation with Gibson but he remained in the game. It's unclear what started the argument.
