Tough road awaits Notre Dame

After routing USC, the road doesn't get easier for the Fighting Irish. Three of their last five games are against ranked foes, and they need to win out for a chance to remain in CFP contention.

“We didn't get much credit for this, but that was when we kind of invented the Wildcat. We played a running back at quarterback a lot that game. Back to what I was trying to explain earlier, you do what you have to do to win. We controlled the clock. They were a good offense; they had Michael Vick at that time. He was a hard one to get off the field as well. It allowed us to run the ball pretty effectively, shorten the game and get a ‘W.” -- Bears coach John Fox taking credit for inventing the Wildcat offense.

"Not making dumb mistakes -- making sure we're locked in mentally. You go the whole week and you try to focus on what you've got installed and what you're going to do. You want to go to a game and execute just as well as you did in practice and I think there were some times in the earlier part of the season where we didn't execute, Atlanta, 88-yard touchdown, other places, situations. I think we've been executing at a high level as far as just the mental aspect of the game." -- Bears DL Akiem Hicks on how the defense has improved.

"He's been great since he stepped in. I told you guys a number of times is that — Monday night, on the road in Baltimore, there's just — and people ask about his growth a lot, I see his growth but it hasn't been so exponential because it's been good since he's been in. I'm sure he's as hard on himself as anybody would be because he wants to be a great player, and he will be. But we need to be better around him collectively. If we're going to choose to run the ball and that's going to be our thing, we need to run it better. We can't be three-and-out and put our defense back on the field when they've been on there for the majority of the game. The time of possession was way too lopsided. So we just need to do things better to help Mitch and to help our team as a whole." -- Bears TE Zach Miller on rookie QB Mitchell Trubisky

Jeff Dickerson ESPN Staff Writer

"Oh, it's big. Since 2015, we hadn't won two in a row. It feels good. Anytime you win in the league, I don't care how you do it, it feels great to come in here on a Monday with a win. We have two in a row. Just keep on working. There's a lot of ball left to play. It's wide open for us. We're up for the challenge. It's exciting now. We're kind of getting back into things and it's a huge challenge to go on the road and face the Saints. Football is fun. -- Bears TE Zach Miller on the team's modest two-game winning streak.

How good was Bell, and how wild was Chicago's win?

On nearly just as many touches as the Bears ran plays Sunday, Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell by himself averaged one more yard per play than Chicago. (ESPN Stats & Info)

NC State is the only team in the ACC's Atlantic Division that is undefeated in league play and still controls its own destiny. A win at Notre Dame this weekend, though, and the Pack could be destined for bigger things. NC State coach Dave Doeren said, "Talking about what it means if we win doesn't make it any easier to beat them." So they don't.

Bears DL Akiem Hicks on former teammate Saints QB Drew Brees: "I don't want to talk about Drew Brees. Nothing to say about him." The Bears play in New Orleans on Sunday.

Panthers control clock, Bears control game

The Panthers controlled the ball, but two defensive touchdowns by rookie Eddie Jackson made the difference. In the process, the Bears became the first team since Dec. 3, 1950 to win a game with no more than five first downs and seven pass attempts, per ESPN Stats & Info.

For all the fantasy owners upset about the anemic Bears offense, defensive lineman Akiem Hicks has a message for you: "start the Bears defense."

Bears scoring any way possible

The Bears have given Mitchell Trubisky all the help he can get on the way to a 2-1 record with the rookie under center. Trubisky and the Bears have been the beneficiaries of three defensive touchdowns, trick plays that saw a punter and a running back each throw a TD pass and a Trubisky throw that bounced off a defender before landing in Zach Miller's arms for a score.

LaVine getting closer to resuming contact (1:16)

Heather Dinich ESPN Senior Writer

I talked to Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly today and asked him how his offensive line matches up with NC State's defensive line: “I think we match up well against anybody that we play. They're certainly very good. It's as good as we've played. Georgia was outstanding as a defensive line. I think there's some similarities to Georgia's defensive line. It will be a great challenge and our guys are looking forward to it. The last time they played Georgia, there were some things we could've done better, and now they get a second shot if you will at a very similar defensive line."
