Why super teams don't win the World Series

The Cubs were baseball's best team with 103 regular-season wins, but just two teams with the outright best record in MLB's wild-card era have won it all. Why does record mean nothing in October?

Game 6 of the NLCS is Saturday night in Chicago. If the Cubs win, the celebration will be 'slightly' more boisterous as they would advance to their first World Series since 1945.

Lester's dominance reminiscent of 1900's Cubs

Jon Lester has started three games in the 2016 playoffs without allowing more than one run in any. The only other Cubs pitchers with more than two career postseason starts giving up fewer than two runs are Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown (one each in the 1906, '07 and '08 World Series) and Orval Overall (one in 1907 and two in '08), the Elias Sports Bureau notes.

Lester among modern postseason greats

After allowing just one run in seven innings in Game 5 of the NLCS, Jon Lester's career postseason ERA is 2.50. ESPN Stats & Info notes it's the third-lowest in the wild-card era (since 1994) among pitchers with 10 playoff starts, surpassed by only Madison Bumgarner (2.11) and Curt Schilling (2.14).

Russell goes "back-to-back"

At 22 years, 271 days old, Addison Russell became the 2nd-youngest shortstop in postseason history to homer in consecutive games, with a long ball in Games 4 and 5 of the NLCS. The only one younger is the Dodgers' Corey Seager (22 years, 165 days old), who did it in the NLDS, per the Elias Sports Bureau.
