Notre Dame and Syracuse's 60 first-half points were just five points fewer than the Giants and Jets have combined to score in their three total games at MetLife Stadium this season. There have been 727 total yards, with the promise of plenty more in the second half.

It's increasingly likely Notre Dame-Texas is this year's version of 2014 Texas A&M-South Carolina: More of a mirage than anything meaningful on the national radar. Notre Dame's defense doesn't appear fixable after allowing 324 yards and 27 points in the first half to Syracuse. Texas' defense might be even worse, enduring multiple breakdowns in technique and alignment. Oklahoma State is averaging 14.8 yards per pass and has converted 6-of-9 third-down opportunities in a 37-point first half.

Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg loved the intensity his team showed during Friday's practice: "It was the most competitive practice we've had here in two years."

What is there to say about this game so far? It's been a hot mess. Or, as others would like to say: "funbad." There have been 551 total yards of offense, 2 special teams scores, Syracuse stopping a fourth-and-goal from the 1 and then converting one themselves, four total penalties, one targeting ejection, one called-back TD and, surely, plenty more to come. It's Notre Dame 30, Cuse 20 ... not even three minutes into the second quarter.

Notre Dame safety ejected for targeting

After Notre Dame's Devin Studstill launched into Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey and was called for a personal foul, the replay booth initiated a targeting call. It's the first time that's happened this season.

There was a fourth-and-1 stop by Syracuse, which was just the latest in what has been the theater of the absurd at MetLife Stadium. ND has blocked and returned an extra point for 2, scored on the first play from scrimmage and has a kickoff return TD. The teams have combined for 405 yards of offense, and it's still the first quarter, with the Irish leading 23-13.

As College GameDay profiles Lamar Jackson, here's what Cordell Hudson said this week about the grief he's gotten from Syracuse teammates after being on the other end of the Week 2 Lamar Leap: "Nah, I mean, obviously when it happened I was a little embarrassed, but he's a great player and I watched the play over and over again. If I would've left my feet I would've been a little down on myself, but … (laughs) ... yeah."
