The Cubs lost to the Reds 2-1 after squandering offensive opportunities late in the game. They failed to get a runner home from third base with 1 out in the seventh then had two on and no outs in the eighth but failed to convert there as well. Finally, the tying run was again on third in the ninth with one out but Jon Jay and Alex Avila struck out. Meanwhile, the Reds got a sacrifice fly in their half of the eighth to plate their first run. Kyle Hendricks was good but the offensive came up short.

Kyle Hendricks threw his best game since coming off the disabled list, pitching into the seventh without allowing a run to the Reds. He gave up 5 hits and 4 walks getting help from his bullpen after coming out of the game. Hendricks' ERA is a respectable 3.45 now.

Joey Votto is now one game shy of the all time record for reaching base two or more times in consecutive games. He's done it in 20 straight after walking twice on Tuesday against the Cubs. Ted Williams did it 21 times in 1948.

Ben Zobrist (neck) said he is available off the bench and could have started on Tuesday but Joe Maddon wanted to give him one more day to heal up. Ironically, Zobrist said he could have hurt his neck taking so many swings because he's been feeling so healthy lately.
