Sources: NU returning to Wrigley

The Chicago Cubs will hold a news conference on Tuesday to announce a partnership with Northwestern University, which will play a variety of sports at Wrigley Field, including football, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation.

The source said Northwestern's soccer and women's softball teams also will play at Wrigley. The partnership will begin immediately with the hope a football game can be played at Wrigley in 2014.

It's unknown how the football field will be configured. Safety concerns forced one end zone to be closed because there wasn't enough room between the back of the end zone and the brick outfield wall when Northwestern hosted Illinois at Wrigley in 2010. Sources say some configuration of the field has been agreed upon.

The Cubs are planning $300 million in Wrigley renovations set to begin this fall, pending city approval. The renovations will take place over five offseasons, according to the plans announced on Jan. 19 at the Cubs Convention.

The Tribune reported the news on Saturday.
