Morel sat out the White Sox's weekend series against the Chicago Cubs due to lumbar back strain. He took a cortisone shot on May 10 and was feeling better until his back began acting up while returning from Los Angeles on Thursday. He is hitting .177 with five RBIs and has a .932 field percentage in 35 games this season.
He was placed on the DL retroactive to May 18.
Hudson, 34, was released by the San Diego Padres on Thursday. He signed a two-year, $11.5 million contract with the Padres before the 2011 season. Hudson hitting .211 with one home run, 11 RBIs and three stolen bases in 35 games this season.
Hudson has played second base throughout his career and has won four Golden Gloves at the position. He was an All-Star in 2007 and 2009. He is also a switch-hitter and has a career .276 average and .343 on-base percentage.
White Sox manager Robin Ventura said Sunday he anticipated Hudson playing mostly third base and filling in for second baseman Gordon Beckham occasionally. Eduardo Escobar played third base during the Cubs series.
