Kyuji Fujikawa to join Cubs

The Chicago Cubs agreed to a deal Thursday with Japanese relief pitcher Kyuji Fujikawa.

The Cubs announced on their official Twitter feed that Fujikawa, 32, will be officially introduced at a news conference on Friday.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Fujikawa could compete with Carlos Marmol, who nearly was traded to the Los Angeles Angels earlier in the offseason, for the Cubs' closer role.

Fujikawa recorded 220 saves in 12 seasons playing for the Hanshin Tigers.

A major league scout told ESPNChicago.com that Fujikawa throws between 91 to 93 mph on a regular basis and has an outstanding breaking ball. The scout said he may fit as a quality setup man better than a closer.
