Jeff Samardzija gets $5.345M deal

CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija has agreed to terms with the team on a one-year, $5.345 million contract for 2014, avoiding an arbitration hearing.

Samardzija, 29, was 8-13 with a 4.34 ERA last season. He submitted a salary proposal of $6.2 million for arbitration; the team was asking for $4.4 million. They settled on a number just above the middle of those two figures.

The Cubs and Samardzija have been unable to come to terms on a long-term deal. The right-hander is set to become a free agent after the 2015 season. They've settled on one-year deals each of the last two offseasons.

With his signing, the Cubs avoided arbitration with all eligible players. They haven't had an arbitration hearing since Theo Epstein took over as team president and Jed Hoyer as general manager in 2011.
