Bulls' Taj Gibson out vs. Mavs

CHICAGO -- Chicago Bulls forward Taj Gibson did not play Friday night against the Dallas Mavericks because of a sore right heel.

"I told Coach [Tom Thibodeau] I wanted to play, I told [head athletic trainer] Fred [Tedeschi] that I was fit to play, but guys just told me to get some rest," Gibson said Friday. "No need to push the issue right now on playing in the preseason, so I look forward to playing either [Saturday] or against the Raptors [on Wednesday]."

Gibson said he wasn't sure if the sore heel was related to the plantar fasciitis that bothered him throughout last season.

"We're just giving him a little bit of rest," Thibodeau said before the game. "It gives us an opportunity to take a look at the big lineup, and then we'll go from there."

Thibodeau and the training staff don't seem too concerned about the injury.

"Quite honestly, if this was the regular season he'd be playing," Thibodeau said. "He's done fine. [This is] more precautionary than anything else.

Rookie Omer Asik started in Gibson's place. Joakim Noah started at power forward and guarded Mavericks All-Star Dirk Nowitzki.
