NIU bans two from bowl game

Northern Illinois suspended junior defensive end Sean Progar and sophomore wide receiver Anthony Johnson for the GoDaddy.com Bowl, the school announced on Wednesday.

Progar was arrested and charged with driving under the influence on Dec. 4. He was a second-team all-conference selection this season, leads the Huskies with 5.5 sacks and has 52 tackles and 11 tackles for loss.

Johnson was cited for underage consumption of alcohol in an unrelated incident on Dec. 4. He has 13 receptions for 174 yards this season.

"After gathering information, reviewing the details of both situations and talking to many individuals, including Anthony and Sean, regarding the events that occurred the night after the MAC Championship game, we have determined that they will not play in the bowl game," Northern Illinois coach Dave Doeren said in a statement. "A lot of variables went into these decisions, and each situation was reviewed separately as they occurred independently of each other. Both players have expressed regret over the decisions they made that night and are truly remorseful."

Northern Illinois will play Arkansas State in the GoDaddy.com Bowl on Jan. 8.
