Chasson Randle picks Stanford

Rock Island senior point guard Chasson Randle committed to Stanford over Illinois and Purdue on Wednesday.

The Illini were hoping to land Randle, ESPN's 38th ranked Class of 2011 player, on Wednesday, and De La Salle senior forward Mike Shaw, the 69th overall player, on Thursday. Shaw is set to make his announcement at 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Randle did have trouble saying no to Illinois coach Bruce Weber and the program he has followed most of his life.

"The hardest part of the process for me was growing up and watching Luther Head, Deron Williams and Dee Brown lead Illinois to the Final Four in 2005 and then deciding to go elsewhere," Randle told ESPN's Paul Biancardi.

"I chose Stanford because the program is growing and it's a great fit both academically and athletically. I wanted the chance to learn the point guard position from one of the greats in coach [Johnny] Dawkins."

Randle played on the club scene for the Chicago-area-based Illinois Wolves.
