Thumb injury sidelines Cleveland Melvin

CHICAGO -- DePaul freshman forward Cleveland Melvin will miss the remainder of the season because of a thumb sprain, the school announced on Monday.

Melvin averages 14.3 points and is among the front-runners for the Big East Rookie of the Year honors. He averages 17.4 points in league play.

Melvin sprained his left thumb against St. John's on Feb. 23 and sat out Saturday's game again South Florida.

The Baltimore native has been one of the bright spots in another rough season for DePaul, which is 7-21 overall and 1-15 in conference play in its first year under coach Oliver Purnell.

The Blue Demons host Rutgers on Wednesday and visit Syracuse on Saturday, with the Big East tournament next week.
