DB Craig Steltz injured vs. Chargers

SAN DIEGO -- Injuries continue to decimate the Bears at the safety position.

Backup Craig Steltz, who started at strong safety in place of Danieal Manning (hamstring), went down in the first quarter of the club's preseason opener against the Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium with what appeared to be a right-ankle injury.

Steltz suffered the injury on a kickoff after the Bears took a 3-0 lead in the opening series on a 38-yard field goal from Robbie Gould. Richard Goodman returned the kickoff 51 yards to the Bears 46.

The Bears scored five plays later on a 28-yard pass from Philip Rivers to Legedu Naanee, who slipped between Chris Harris and Zack Bowman. Steltz had walked into the locker room with team trainers just minutes before the touchdown.

The club announced the strong safety won't return. Steltz's injury follows a series of setbacks at the position. Chris Harris suffered a back injury early on at training camp, while rookie Major Wright missed time with a strained groin.
