Brandon Meriweather fined $25,000

Chicago Bears safety Brandon Meriweather received more bad news Friday when an NFL spokesman announced the league has fined him $25,000 for striking an opponent late.

Just a day before, the team informed Meriweather of its plans to move him out of the starting lineup.

Meriweather received a $20,000 fine Oct. 2 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith. Meriweather reportedly said he planned to appeal that fine.

The latest transgression came on Meriweather's hit on Detroit Lions receiver Nate Burleson in the team's 24-13 loss at Ford Field on Monday night.

The fine goes down as Meriweather's third in the past two years.
