CHICAGO -- Not only did the Hawks lose the game against Vancouver on Wednesday, they may have lost two of their stars in the process.
Toews was blindsided by a vicious -- but legal -- hit near center ice by Willie Mitchell, who had just left the penalty box. He immediately went down while Kris Versteeg and others tried to retaliate. Toews tried to get to his feet and skate off but fell again, obviously struggling with his balance. He finally made it to the bench, sat with his teammates for a time but then went to the locker room. He did not return.
"It was a clean hit," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "He didn't see [Mitchell] coming."
Quenneville added: "We'll see how he is [Thursday]."
Seabrook also left after what television announcers said was a "boot to the face." Seabrook was visibly shaken up on the bench and did not go back on the ice for the final minutes.
Toews' and Seabrook's status for Saturday's game is unclear.
