Hawks' Nick Boynton suspended

CHICAGO -- Blackhawks defenseman Nick Boynton has been suspended one game for making a throat-slashing gesture after fighting Tampa Bay's Blair Jones Wednesday night, the league announced Friday.

Boynton and Jones fought after Boynton checked Chris Durno in a near knee-to-knee collision. After the fight, it appeared Boynton made a throat-slashing gesture and he was given a game misconduct.

Boynton will have to sit out the Blackhawks' regular-season opener in Colorado on Oct. 7. He is available to play in the remaining preseason games. The NHL said Friday that he will forfeit $2,688 of his salary, with the money given to a players' emergency assistance fund.

Boynton was unavailable for comment Friday. He didn't practice because of what the team described as an upper body injury.
