Corey Crawford to play Friday

Expect Chicago Blackhawks starting goaltender Corey Crawford to make his preseason debut on Friday against the Washington Capitals, while forwards Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa won't make their exhibition debuts until next week.

"They know I need some games to get the timing and speed," Crawford said after practice Wednesday. "I don't know [how many]. Three or four should be good."

Kane is still recovering from offseason wrist surgery and has an appointment with the doctor on Sept. 26.

Hossa appeared in camp for the first time Wednesday after missing time for the birth of his child. He was also mourning the loss of his friend, Pavol Demitra, in a plane crash earlier this month.

Crawford, meanwhile, sat out Tuesday's 4-2 loss to Edmonton as Ray Emery and Alexander Salak split the game as they vie for the backup job. They'll do the same on Thursday, in Pittsburgh, with Salak starting and Emery finishing. Coach Joel Quenneville said several other veterans will make their preseason debuts on Thursday as well.

The rest of Thursday's lineup for their contest against the Penguins includes forwards Bryan Bickell, Brandon Bollig, Dan Carcillo, Chris DiDomenico, Byron Froese, Michael Frolik, Rob Klinkhammer, Peter LeBlanc, Brett McLean, Brandon Pirri, Brandon Saad and Andrew Shaw.

The defenders who will dress for the game are Brian Connelly, Shawn Lalonde, Joe Lavin, Nick Leddy, Sami Lepisto, Sean O'Donnell and John Scott.

Also on Wednesday, the Hawks sent 2011 first-round draft picks Phillip Danault and Mark McNeill back to their respective junior clubs.

After taking on the Penguins Thursday, the Hawks will play their preseason home opener against Washington on Friday. Former Hawk Troy Brouwer signed with the Capitals as a free agent this past offseason but won't play in the game.
